chat

Well, it’s a tad late, but it’s here. You’ll like this folks, simply download, install, and run. Chat allows you to chat to anyone else using the program. With support for PMs as well, you’ll be able to have one to one with your friend in the next classroom or office cubical.

Chat works by broadcasting messages over the local area network. This does pose some disadvantages (such as every computer in the broadcast domain receiving your message), but never fear, most network administrators don’t monitor their network traffic, so you should be ok. Also take note what you write to your mates in PMs, they are broadcast too.

In the upcoming versions I shall look into moving away from connectionless UDP in favor of reliable TCP. This will eliminate the need to broadcast as much and will provide a layer of security when PM’ing.

Chat is in open-beta, so if you find a bug, don’t hesitate to get in contact with me at rascal999[at]gmail[dot]com. You can also leave a comment, or visit my forum. Enjoy chatting!
